What you’ll learn from this episode
This week on All Things Conflict, I wanted to model a conversation live in front of the camera between two board members, who find themselves at odds with each other over a key hiring decision. I acted out as the chair in this meeting, beginning a conversation between Sean, an Executive Director and Mark, a non-executive director, hoping to bring them back to their humanity to ease tensions at board level.
Boardrooms are often where the most important decisions are made but they can also be where tensions run high.
This discussion opens a window into the very real challenges that boards face when executive and non-executive directors hold different perspectives. Rather than shying away from disagreement, this episode highlights how conflict, when managed well, can become a powerful driver of better decision-making.
Key Insights from the Episode
Root causes of boardroom tensions — why conflict often emerges and how to address it early.
The role of communication and respect in keeping discussions constructive.
Internal promotions vs. external hires — the pros and cons of each approach.
Balancing business objectives with interpersonal dynamics, ensuring decisions serve the company as a whole.
As I guide the conversation, I encourage both Sean and Mark to explore their perspectives openly. In doing so, the episode demonstrates how a collaborative mindset can turn disagreement into deeper understanding and stronger governance.
