Facing the Man who Killed My Son
With..
Joan Scourfield
In this powerful episode of All Things Conflict, I speak with Joan, a mother who experienced every parent’s worst nightmare, and discovered an unexpected path towards healing.
In 2011, Joan’s son James was killed in an unprovoked “one-punch” attack in Nottingham. In a single moment of senseless violence, a young life was lost and a family was shattered.
When the case went through the criminal justice system, Joan hoped the process might bring some form of closure. Instead, it left her with more questions and a deep sense of injustice. The man responsible, Jacob, received a sentence of just 14 months.
But what weighed most heavily on Joan was not the sentence, it was the unanswered questions.
Why did it happen?
What had Jacob been thinking that night?
Did he truly understand the consequences of his actions?
The courtroom could not provide those answers, and Joan found herself carrying a growing burden of anger and bitterness.
Searching for Answers Beyond the Courtroom
Determined to understand the truth behind her son’s death, Joan chose a path few could imagine. She began a Restorative Justice journey.
Restorative Justice creates space for dialogue between victims and offenders, offering victims the chance to ask questions the legal system often leaves unanswered, and giving offenders the opportunity to confront the human impact of their actions.
For Joan, it began simply as a search for information.
Meeting the Man Behind the Crime
When Joan eventually met Jacob face to face, she encountered something she had not expected.
Instead of the image fixed in her mind, she saw a vulnerable young man capable of remorse and reflection.
The meeting did not erase the tragedy, nor could it bring James back. But it gave Joan something the justice system never had: understanding.
A Different Path Forward
What began as a quest for answers gradually evolved into a remarkable story of forgiveness and human connection.
Joan chose not to remain trapped in bitterness. Instead, she supported Jacob’s efforts to rebuild his life, encouraging his education and rehabilitation.
Her journey shows that while the justice system can deliver punishment, healing sometimes comes from a different place, through dialogue, accountability, and compassion.
