From Hospitality Empire to Prison Mentor
With..
Shab Hashtroudi
In this episode of All Things Conflict, I welcome Shab Hashtroudi, whose life went from running a thriving, multi-million-pound hospitality empire that included hotels, restaurants, and pubs, to facing a dawn raid that changed everything. In an instant, everything he had built was under threat, and what followed was a grueling seven-week trial that would ultimately end in a six-year prison sentence.
A Trial That Shocked Everyone
The courtroom experience was surreal. Beyond the legal pressure, there were moments that seemed almost unbelievable. One juror reportedly wore a T-shirt mocking the defendants, a stark reminder of how unpredictable and, at times, deeply unfair the system can feel. For Shab, these experiences underscored the intense personal and emotional toll of facing a trial that could alter your life forever.
Finding Purpose Behind Bars
But Shab refused to let incarceration define him. Determined to make his time meaningful, he dedicated himself to the Dialogue Road Map, a training programme aimed at communication, reflection, and mental health support. Over the course of his sentence, he logged more than 700 hours as a peer facilitator, working closely with fellow inmates, many struggling with severe mental health challenges, isolation, and suicidal thoughts.
Through this work, Shab not only helped others find their voice and feel heard, but he also found a sense of purpose and resilience that kept him grounded amid one of life’s toughest chapters.
Turning Adversity Into Impact
Shab’s story is a powerful reminder that even the darkest moments can become opportunities for growth. Rather than retreating into despair, he transformed his experience into action—helping others navigate challenges he once faced himself. His journey shows that resilience isn’t about avoiding hardship—it’s about what you do in the face of it.
