The Art Of Difficult Dialogue

With..

Fiona Ruttle

In this episode of All Things Conflict, I talk with Fiona Ruttle about conflict, communication, and restorative justice, and how conflict can be a powerful teacher rather than something to fear.

Fiona shared her powerful journey working in prison chaplaincy and how those experiences fundamentally reshaped her understanding of conflict. Being present with people at some of the most difficult moments of their lives challenged conventional ideas of punishment and accountability, and ultimately led her toward restorative justice as a more humane and effective approach.

What Conflict Taught Us About Humanity

We explored how conflict often reflects unmet needs, unheard voices, and broken connections. Fiona’s stories from inside the prison system highlighted the importance of seeing people beyond their worst moments, and how doing so can open the door to healing and responsibility rather than further harm.

Creating Safe Spaces for Dialogue

A key theme in our conversation was the importance of creating safe spaces where honest dialogue can happen. We talked about what it takes to slow conversations down, build trust, and stay present, especially when emotions run high or perspectives differ.

Tools for Navigating Difficult Conversations

Fiona shared practical tools that support meaningful dialogue, including the Dialogue Roadmap and principles of Nonviolent Communication. These approaches offer concrete ways to navigate difficult conversations with clarity, empathy, and intention, without losing connection.

Stories of Transformation and Healing

Some of the most moving moments Fiona shared involved real-life stories of transformation, including intergenerational mediations that fostered understanding, accountability, and healing. These stories served as powerful reminders that change is possible, in the most complex and deeply rooted conflicts.

Seeing Conflict as an Opportunity

What stayed with me most is the idea that conflict doesn’t have to be a battle to win. When approached with curiosity and care, it can become an opportunity for growth, learning, and deeper connection—with ourselves and with others.
