What is Love?

One of the most searched for questions on Google around this time of year is, ‘What is love?’

The most common definition is ‘an intense feeling of deep affection’. Yet, there are many other descriptions and definitions include a complex mix of negative and positive emotions.

I once read that what a baby receives immediately after birth is what they will interpret as love. A baby is born ready for love, and 80% of a baby’s brain develops in their first three years, so early experiences actually sculpt the structure of their brain to build the foundations for their future.  This is a wiring process, where the connections that are stimulated flourish, and those that aren’t wither away.  A lack of love can result in lower production of growth hormones, while emotional warmth releases love hormones, which stimulate growth.

And, what we receive immediately after birth varies wildly according to our environment, the culture we are born into and the individual psychology of our first carers.

It follows then, that one person’s, ‘I love you’, may mean something entirely different to someone else’s.

The DRM Is a process of recognising, demonstrating and reviewing love for oneself, for others and for the whole through our self talk and our dialogue. It helps us make sense of love and what we enact in its name.
