Tis the Season to exercise self control… or is it?

This year we have all had to exercise some form of self control with more or less success than others. Risk of infection combined with Government enforcement has had an impact on our freedom to choose. And the effects of this are rippling through society. Talk of Covid weight gain, doom scrolling and an increase in domestic violence and alcohol abuse are all signs of our ability or inability to exercise self control.

Now the festive season is upon us and we find ourselves grappling with willpower and self control over things like how many mince pies to consume in one sitting!

So before we tuck in to the turkey (or plant based alternative) or start swigging the Wincarnis  (you need to be a certain age to get this reference), why not take stock and see how well you’re doing on the self control and willpower front?

And, in taking stock, try to let go of the punitive self blame and guilt and compassionately assess your capacity on a scale of 1 to 10. And, if you’re not happy with your rating, ask yourself what you can do to nudge your rating up a bit.

Maria’s Midweek Mindfulness

Recently, I have been considering my relationship with food. It’s an area where I have grappled with self control. I’ve been listening to how I talk to myself on this subject and it’s been enlightening.

The Wednesday Whisper

What areas of your life would you like to have more self control? Could you benefit from treating yourself with compassion over it?
