The Real Reason Conflict Repeats
With..
Maria Arpa MBE
In this episode of All Things Conflict, I explore something I see everywhere: organisations, families and communities trying to fix conflict by adjusting what’s visible on the surface while ignoring what’s happening underneath.
I often explain this using a simple plumbing analogy. Imagine the internal plumbing of a building. Most people focus on the taps, sinks and toilets, the parts we can see and control. When something goes wrong, we tighten a tap or replace a fixture.
But the real problem is often in the sewage system, the hidden network that carries away waste.
Conflict works the same way.
The Hidden Waste in Our Systems
When tension, resentment and unspoken feelings build up, they create a kind of emotional waste. If that waste has nowhere to go, it doesn’t simply disappear. It leaks through the floorboards in the form of arguments, power struggles, burnout, and sometimes even physical and mental health issues.
This is why so many conflict-resolution attempts fail. We focus on the visible symptoms while ignoring the system that is supposed to process what people feel but rarely say.
Until we address that deeper system, the leaks keep coming.
From Power Over to Power With
Another theme I explore in this episode is the difference between two models of power.
Most of us have been raised inside systems based on Power Over. These are hierarchical structures where control, manipulation and suppression are often normalised. On the surface, they can create order and compliance, but underneath they generate pressure.
There is another way to organise ourselves.
Power With is about connection, dialogue and shared responsibility. It does not rely on dominance or submission. Instead, it invites people to participate in shaping solutions together.
The Strength in Surrender
One of the most misunderstood ideas I talk about is surrender.
In many Power Over cultures, surrender is seen as weakness. But in reality, surrender can be the doorway to genuine strength. It is the moment when we stop trying to control every outcome and begin listening deeply enough for something new to emerge.
Paradoxically, that is where real inner power begins.
Dialogue Road Map
In the episode, I introduce the Dialogue Road Map, a practical way to shift conversations away from the familiar win-lose dynamic.
Instead of defending positions, the Dialogue Road Map invites people into a different kind of conversation, one that moves toward genuine heart-to-heart dialogue. When that happens, creativity replaces confrontation and new possibilities begin to appear.
Fix the Plumbing, Not Just the Taps
Whether you are leading a team, raising a family, or navigating tensions in your community, the invitation is simple: stop fixing the taps and start looking at the plumbing.
When we begin addressing the deeper systems that hold our relationships, something powerful happens. Pressure releases, relationships reset, and what I call the frequency of love becomes available again.
And that changes everything.
