“You say you love rain, but you use an umbrella to walk under it.

You say you love the sun, but you seek shade when it is shining,

You say you love the wind but when it comes you close your window.

So that’s why I’m scared when you say you love me”

When I reflect on the couples work I have done over the last 20 years, I wish I had found this quote sooner. It paints a picture that epitomises the state of many couple relationships when they are in trouble. It opens the dialogue about self protection and vulnerability. To what extent am I responsible for protecting myself and to what extent do I need to surrender my vulnerability to the relationship? And how do we have that conversation? How do we review it, monitor it and change it as we mature together? And to what extent are we each capable and willing to find true intimacy?

It is a formula unique to each pair and can only be arrived at through presence and dialogue.

Maria’s Mindfulness Moment

It took the best part of 50 years for me to truly understand surrender without submission as a path to trust and intimacy. I’ve been reaping the rewards ever since and there is always a deeper level of learning.

The Wednesday Whisper
