A way of life

Social change is a continuous process. When Cesar A. Cruz wrote that art should “afflict the comfortable and comfort the afflicted”, I could resonate with the sentiment as a philosophy for social change.

If we are seriously interested in equity, empowerment and fairness, then it is important that (in countries where it is possible to talk about social change) social change agents keep the comfortable in a state of conscious curiosity whilst comforting those who are on the margins of society.

The true test is how the comfortable react to the challenge and whether they can involve themselves in the comforting, or can only do it at arms length, if at all.

The DRM teaches us that we can only create social change by mutual invitation to dialogue. In the face of rejection, the work falls to activists. What type of activism is a whole other topic.
