A few hallmarks of Domination Culture

I’ve often spoken of Domination Culture where the few control the many. It’s a system that’s been in place for thousands of years but has been stepped up since the Industrial revolution.

One of the main issues is that individuals are often not aware of their attachment to Domination Culture and are totally unaware that they are replicating this system in their personal and professional relationships.

Here are a few examples:

-Using threat and bribery to get the desired result

-Motivating people to act through fear, guilt or shame

-Imposing change and expecting compliance without complaint

-Using either/or language to limit choice

-Withholding promised and agreed resources to force obedience

-Refusing to learn from objections of those on the receiving end

All of these constitute abuse of power and misuse of authority. Very often the person dishing it out will label, judge and blame the resistors by marginalizing and scapegoating them.

The language can be very polite or it can be aggressive.

The problem is that when someone uses these ‘techniques’, the unaware receiver will mirror back the same behaviour by taking an oppositional position and digging their heels in. Now everyone is using Domination Culture and we are fighting.

Resisting such a force is much more subtle and requires us to unhook from the drama and find inner peace in the midst of the madness.

From inner peace we can chart a course with a 360 degree assessment of our true options.

Maria’s Midweek Mindfulness

The DRM helps us identify Domination Culture and find the inner peace from which we can be the change we wish to see. We cannot control what others do but we can choose our attitude to what is happening so that we know when not to engage.

The Wednesday Whisper

Are you caught up in a Domination Culture family or workplace? Are you using the techniques listed or are you on the receiving end of them or both? How do you change your response to the system?
